Abstract

Why do journal articles sit in Online First for so long?

I have a paper coming out sometime in Erkenntnis. This may change by the time you read this, but as I write it’s one of 199 articles in Online First. These are articles that have been accepted, copyedited, and typeset twice: once in PDF and once in XML. But they aren’t in any issue yet. Why not?

One hypothesis would be that there is a printing budget, and that puts a bottleneck at the last stage of production. That’s why there is a queue. I’m rather sceptical of that for at least four reasons.

  1. Printing and postage is cheap, especially relative to the cost of copyediting and two lots of typesetting. You’ve done the expensive parts, why hold up now? Resource constraints strike me as a considerably more plausible reason for why accepted articles wouldn’t get copyedited or typeset for a while, just not for why they wouldn’t hit print on a paper where they’ve already done those things.
  2. Erkenntnis, like many other commercial journals, has massively increased its output in terms of pages over recent years. There doesn’t seem to be any hard constraint on how much it puts out.
  3. The fights over political philosophy journals suggest that the main downward pressure on publishing is coming from academic editors, not presses. But these 199 articles have been accepted by the academic editors, and just need one last step of processing. Why would publishers, who have gone to great lengths elsewhere to increase the flow of articles, stop here?
  4. If this was something that was worrying the journal, they could put in a submission moratorium like Noûs often does. The non-existence of such a moratorium suggests that they aren’t worried by the queue.

So why is Online First, and its counterparts with other publishers, so prevalent? Let’s look at some data first. Table 1 lists some Springer philosophy journals, with the number of papers currently in the Online First section. If there’s a 0 I couldn’t find the section, and I think it doesn’t exist, but I definitely could have make a mistake.1 2

1 Synthese is an interesting special case. (EDIT 2/21 - the following sentence isn’t right.) They no longer have issues; like Imprint each article comes out as a self-standing piece, with a page number starting at 1. So every article is in final form as soon as it hits the website.

Why are some (but not all) of these queues so large? Why are the philosophy of science queues generally shorter than the others (though arguably Erkenntnis is a very notable exception). It could be there are resource constraints on going into print, though for the reasons I gave at the top, I’m a little sceptical. But maybe that second column is part of the story.

I’ve sorted that list by Impact Factor. That’s something that Springer highlights, and offers as a prominent sort criteria for their journal category pages.

What is Impact Factor? It’s a phenomenally stupid metric for journals that seems to have become rather prominent. The statistic was, I believe, first developed by Clarivate. Figure 1 is a screenshot from their description of it.

In any year, it’s the mean number of citations to articles published 1-2 years ago. It’s a really big deal - it’s the statistic that some companies, including Springer, highlight most prominently. It also makes no sense for philosophy.

Citations in philosophy tend to be somewhat older than this. That is, it isn’t common for articles 1-2 years old to get cited that often. Even some of the most prominent philosophy articles didn’t have that many citations in that window.

I’m working on a research project that looks at citations between 100 leading philosophy journals. The data I have goes back into the mid twentieth century, but citations weren’t as important then, and in any case the data isn’t as clean or as relevant. Table 2 shows some very prominent philosophy articles from around the turn of the century, how many citations they have just in these 100 journals since they were published, and how many of those citations were in the first two years.

Publishing the articles in Table 2 basically hurt the impact factors of the journals that published them. But they are some of the most impactful, and I’d say some of the best, articles published from that time.

Maybe they are outliers though. Let’s look at the whole set of articles published in these 100 journals. I’ll focus on the period since 2001, since citation norms were a bit different before then.

Figure 2 shows a statistic I call citation ratio. For any two years old and new, it is the following ratio.

I picked 3 and 10 there because years 3 to 10 are when typically articles get their most citations. The aim of this statistic is to normalise for the rather dramatic changes in citation practices over the last few decades. I only have full data running through 2021, which is why some of the graphs stop when they do. OK, that said, Figure 2 shows the citation ratios. Each facet holds fixed old, and the x-axis is new.

The basic pattern here is not too surprising. Articles take a while to get noticed, then they hit peak citations, then it’s a decay, rapid some years and slow in others, into obsolescence. When does this happen? Here it’s easiest to put the age of the citation, i.e., new - old, on the x-axis. I’ve done that in Figure 3. I’ve only plotted the first 10 years to make it more visible where the peaks are.

Just like the last graph, but with the x-axis now being the age, i.e., the difference between the old and new year. It is more apparent that the peak comes around year 3-5.

The biggest years are typically 3-5 years after publication. In Figure 4 I’ve put all the data points from Figure 3 onto a single plot. There’s a bit of jitter added to make the points stand out. The colors are not particularly important; they are different for the different facets but aren’t significant for this story. I’ve also put a trendline through the graph.

I did one other thing in Figure 4: I shaded the first two years. Those are the years that count for Impact Factor. As you can see, they are well below the peak. What would happen if all articles were published with a date stamp two years after their actual publication? Well, now we’d get Figure 5.

If you could have the citations highlighted in Figure 5 be what counted for the important statistics, rather than the citations highlighted in Figure 4, your journal will look more impressive. By a happy coincidence, having articles in Online First, available to read and cite but not yet with a date stamp so the two year clock for Impact Factor doesn’t start ticking, has exactly that effect.

Is that why philosophy journals use Online First so much, and so much more than journals in other disciplines? I don’t know, but it would explain something that otherwise seems rather mysterious to me.

That said, this totally could be a consequence of one or other kind of resource constraint. If so, I hope it gets resolved - it would be good to have page numbers for journal articles sooner rather than later.
